Here are my reviews, stories and weird stuff of the levels of IGI1, which i thought i'd share with you, still one of the best games i've ever played, and still play ! Please feel free to comment or add your own obervations to this classic game.


Level 1 - Trainyard
A nice simple level to start off with. Nice graphics and layout, although my PC has a bit of trouble with textures as its an old G/Card. One of the few levels where Jones can't go anywhere he wants - the entire level is played within a fenced area. I've recently discovered you can get outside of the fence, but more of that later. I also recently worked out a way of completing this level in under 2 mins, here's how - if you get on to the roof of the start building then jump down on to the ground at the front via the low roof and make your way to the water tower on the left with the sniper guy (one of the guards comes out if you make too much noise on the roof, so be wary) - climb the tower, and go round to the right and take out the sniper guy. Now switch to the MP5 suppressed machine gun (my fave weapon ever !) and zoom in on any one of guards patrolling in the areas opposite the long building in front of you - and shoot your chosen guy, BUT NOT TO KILL - hit him in the leg or something. If you can do this, the guy will run to the gate you can't open from the outside and open it for you - take him out with the sniper rifle as he stands motionless while the gate opens. Also take out the guard in the other tower to the right, the camera below him (on the tower) and the guard in the sentry building. You can now get down from the tower and turn left through the newly opened gate and run alongside the long building and cut out the back part of the level. You will have to take out the guards patrolling (one patrols along the length of the building and you can't see him from the water tower) - if you want you can take them out first from the Water Tower (except the guard you can't see), but make sure you kill them away from the cameras. Go through the gate at the end and you can reach the truck in double quick time (the guards in the last cabin sometimes see you but you should be at the truck by then)

Notes: In case you don't know, there is a Minimi and ammo in the long building, at the back, behind a crate, although its in a bit of a pointless place as regards to the level. Also, at the start of the level, on the roof of the first building, if you go to the opposite wall, near the ladder which goes down inside, you'll see, halfway along, the fence meets the building wall. A bit further along the fence is a junction, with some crates on the outside. By jumping off the roof onto this fence, you can jump along (don't try and walk / run or you'll fall off) and then once past the junction, jump a bit to your left and you are outside the fence ! Here is a pic from outside. You can only get back in by climbing the crates. You can explore, and this leads me to an oddity, when playing the level previously, i noticed the sound of a helicopter in the top right area of the level (as you look at the map). If you're outside, follow the railtrack up the hill and round to the left and at the end (its a long walk !) is a blanked off tunnel, and the noise of the helicoper is really loud ! But i've never been able to find it !

Level 2 - SAM Base
A nice level again, with a nice objective of mining the SAM batteries. You start in a poxy place - as soon as you break cover, the guy in the tower behind you (and sometimes the guy patrolling below) start taking pot shots at you - rather disconcerting ! Only two weeks ago, i discovered something on this level i'd missed before - a medikit. Its in one of the cabins in the start area (the one NOT containing the M16), in the corner near a table, but NOT on the table, on the floor - you have to look for it. Could'nt believe it when i saw it ! Have you found it ? The guards blend in well with the surroundings on this level; as you approach the third SAM battery, you have to watch out for them. Good job the binoculars show them up ! The guys with the Minimi's seem never to hit me - they seem to fire into the wall of the pill box they are standing in. Once again, the suppressed MP5 is a great weapon to use here with its zoom - head shots all the way. Good level.

Level 3 - Military Airbase
A very large open level, with a murky/misty and wet setting. Nice atmosphere. You start a bit too far IMO from your first objective - the dome on the hill is not necessary to visit to complete the level. I always find the sniper guy on the water tower a bastard as you approach the entrance gate in the building complex to the east - make sure he's on the farside when you try and enter. Quite a convoluted level in retrospect - you need to be on your toes with the sniper guys patrolling the building close to the water tower as well. Lots of places to explore, but not much in them. Its possible in certain places to use the zoom on the sniper rifle whilst in the east building complex and zoom in on the Control Tower in the distance and just make out the head of the guy in the tower thru the window - and shoot him ! Saves time ! Nice ending to this level too - Anya and David's banter and the Fighter Aircraft sequence are pretty cool in my book. They should never have changed David's voice for IGI 2 either.

Notes: Another ghostly helicopter ! If you go north from your start position, and west, past the hangar and the control tower, and into the wilderness, there is another helicopter noise ! I believe its the chopper that dropped you which parks itself inside the mountains somehow, but i'm not sure.

Level 4 - GOD
Another different idea for a level, if a bit dull - nice graphics again. The guy in the window with the Minimi is a bit handy ! I've explored most of the houses i think, but not found anything. And i've tried getting into that buliding complex where the action takes place but no joy - even alerting the guards and trying to get them to open the gate proved fruitless. There are many vantage points to choose from, but the obvious one is the water tower midway down. I've been caught out by those guards who sneak up on you a few times when you use the watertower - bastards !

Level 5 - Radar Base
An excellent level, with lovely scenic views. Well laid out in two main areas. Its a level i've played a few times. Can be quite tricky too at first. I remember having trouble the first time i played it in not realising i was supposed to pick up the access card from the desk ! You can also approach the first part of this level from the back as well - and climb over the dividing fence to get inside the inner bit via the gate at the end. The guards in the back buildings who are stationary and stay inside can be a handful to pick off. I like to place trip mines in the first building near the door and in the first room, then go back outside to the dividing wall between the two buildings and fire my Ak47 - this alerts a couple of the guards who run through and get themselves killed on my trip mines.
The second part is relatively easy, especially when using the M16 and its grenades. Could have done with a few more guards. I like placing the trip mine on the building wall so the patrolling guard detonates it - although it baffles me, as in IGI2, why a guard ignores trip mines and walks right up to them whilst he will try and avoid grenades !

Love the Desert Eagle ! Much more kick than the Glock - wish this was standard issue !

Notes: This has always struck me as odd - the double Uzi. Why do you have to pick up two together in special caches ? On this level for instance, if the alarm goes off, some of the guards who appear carry Uzi's - and yet if you pick one up, then another, you don't get double UZI's ... ! Also, in relation to the guards, the room they come from (first building, ground floor, near the lift) is inaccessible to you for some reason (its a common layout and on other levels, the door is openable). Anyway, if you want to get inside you can - simply set off the alarm then pick off one of the guards who comes out (outside somewhere), but closeby the door. Then run inside by the door. Each guard respawns once, so you have four chances to do this - when the respawned guard opens the door, you can get inside (you can open the door from the inside) ... but its empty anyway!

Now we come to some of the best IGI levels ever ...


Level 6 - Get Priboi
A great level, plenty to do, loads of weapons and a nice layout. The first part is always tricky as some of the guards respawn in that first building, and it can be a nightmare to get in there and stop them setting off the alarm. The firing range is cool, with a nice assortment of weapons to pick up. This was another level i recently discovered something on - where the guy patrols in the compund near the firing range, with all the green boxes under cover - i always knew there was a LAW80 there, but on the nearside, i'd missed there were 4 grenades lying on top of a box. I've had much fun with this level. I never exit the inner compound as advised by Anya - those three respawing guards from the cabin make it too difficult, not to mention the other tower when you slide down to it, and the guard on top and those who come out below - what i do is climb up the tower til the helicopter takes off, then slide back down and run into the corner behind me, and let the three guards from the cabin open the gate and stand outside. I then pick them off using the sniper or the MP5, then exit before the next three come out. Its easier, and also the guards in the area at the base of the second tower don't come out. The second part, where you rifle Priboi's warehouse - one of the guards in that area, located in a upper room - he always takes a chunk out of me through the window when i enter from downstairs. Right sod he is. And you have to take him out as there are cabinets you need to search ...

I now start this level differently - from the start position, i turn right and follow the fence anti-clockwise, eventually running along the outside of the hangar wall, before reaching a short bit of fence and then the wall where the generator building is ... if you stop before you reach the fence, and make sure you are against the wall of the hangar, and (via the map) make sure the guard in the generator area is well away from you, fire your glock a couple of times. This will alert the guard in the hangar. Now continue along, turning left at the corner of the generator wall til you get to the outer gate - now back up away from the gate until you reach the hilly area - the alerted guard (and sometimes he is a bit slow) will run and open the gate - you can take him out quietly with the suppressed MP5 and enter the level without going through the tricky first building ...

Notes - There are some great things in this level. The chopper which activates when you climb the tower - it actually lands a short distance away from your start position on the level - you can backtrack and watch it land - and it slides down the hill a little way ! You can also take out the guard inside and get his Uzi ! Here is a pic ! I've also shot this guy with the sniper rifle while he is in flight (not easy with a moving target) - i was expecting his Uzi to fall to earth - but it stays in mid-air ! You can see it with the binoculars or the sniper zoom. Another thing i tried was to place all the landmines on Priboi's car before blowing up the refinery and getting him to escape. I wondered if the car would explode - but it drove away and left all the mines in mid air ! Here is a pic !. You can also jump onto Priboi's moving car as it exits the compound and go for a little ride ... however the car vanishes as it approaches the building where the helicopter is situated and if you are riding it the game crashes !

Level 7 - Border Crossing
The first snow level - beautiful - falling snow and lovely skyline - dark with lighter edges. And a great level, much better than its equiv on IGI-2. Another level i've played a lot. For starters, i never knew for a while that the truck you have to get on board at the very end of the level actually starts near the house with the sniper guy at the start of the level. After a short delay, it drives off. Never noticed it originally- probably paying too much attention to the guards and the tanks ! I've actually managed to run through the start area and reach the truck as it starts up, but not quite been able to overtake it - picture. I had the idea of jumping on it if i could and hitching a lift but it would'nt have it. I have followed the truck as close as i can, and have managed to keep it in sight long enough to reach the cabin with the LAW80 and use the LAW80 and take a shot at it as it drives off into the distance - i've managed to hit it, but it says "mission failed" and the level ends !
I also always used to skirt round the mountain when i first played it, letting the chopper pass. This is another level in which Jones is limited in his exploration by the use of mines. However, now I just follow the road, kill the guards by the jeep, follow the bend and run to the ruined area on the right, where you can hide from the chopper (watch out for the guard). If you are quick enough, you can continue running and reach the house on the left with the sniper guy, but its touch and go - a couple of times i've made it, gone to peek outside only to find the chopper has fired its missles and they are just about to hit ! Dead me !
I've also got the LAW80 and gone back to the start area, and blown up the remaining tank at the back (not the one that follows you in at the start) - so i could explore that area. But i found nothing. Also, at the start area, if you run in the direction of the tank and can get past it, you come to somekind of sloped area ..

Notes: The chopper that pursues you from behind the mountains actually makes a landing. You can only really see it if you climb the far side of the mountains on your right after the bend with the jeep ... the chopper lands inbetween the two mountains in the distance, but its quite funny, as it pauses in midair for an instant before nose diving into the snow ! But it lands OK. You need binoculars/sniper zoom to follow it though - here's a pic ! Unfortunately, you can't reach it as its well in a mined area. Also, at the very end of the level, instead of running to the truck, you can open the exit gate and follow the road ! But i don't recall if i ever followed it far ...

Level 8 - Re-supply
Another beautiful level, and probably the hardest so far, with three seperate areas. Even right at the start, when you break cover, that bastard sniper guy in the nearby tower always see you and more often or not gets a hit on you before you can make the wall. I also had a hell of a time trying to figure out why the alarm kept going off and closing the exit gate - the cameras in the central area were a nightmare, and if the alarm went off, out came the respawning guards. In the end, i realised that a camera will activate slowly if it detects a body or yourself, but will go off instantly if it detects a broken camera. And this was all before i realised you could go to the containers against the back wall, jump up onto them via the crate hidden behind them and exit this area by jumping over the wall !
The snow in this level is so crisp and white - when i run to get the sniper rifles from the towers, the snow is dazzling ! Utterly superb. The second area is also tricky. Going in via the back way is best, but picking off the soliders from the nearby watch tower is good ploy beforehand as well. Its tricky if the alarm goes off and you have the two tanks to deal with ...

Notes - IGI seems to have two tanks - an advanced one which looks more modern and uses a machine gun, and the old style one. In the second area - if you set off the alarm, allow the tanks to activate, then turn off the alarm (there is a button near the ruined tank on the wall of the bus shelter style building), the old style tank becomes truly passive and will not fire at you, but the other still uses its machine gun. If you take out the modern tank with the LAW80, you can climb on top of the old style tank and go for a ride - pic here !. You will have to go outside and climb on the roof of the bulding at the back, but you can jump off onto the tank when its close by.
Another thing i've noticed is near the SAM launcher - after you blow it up, sometimes a group of three guards appear. This only happens occasionally for me and i'm not sure what causes it ! They behave oddly as well, because sometimes they seem to be throwing things at me, but they always fly past and never explode !
Finally a bug. Anya says you have to blow up the SAM so the evac helicopter can get you out - however, if you ignore the SAM and switch off the radar in the dome, the helicopter lands anyway ... but you can't take off til you go back and blow up the SAM ! Perhaps Anya was lying !
One other thing - the aircraft that blows up the SAM - i'm willing to bet it lands somewhere - one day, i'll explore and see if i can find it - but it seems to fly so far away !

Level 9 - Missile Trainyard
Another level i found hard. A bit dull graphically. Not much to do or explore on this level really. The biggest problem to start with is the sniper guy, who sees you as you enter the area from the bridge and gets a couple of shots off before you can hide. Also the guards patrolling the first platform who activate the alarm if you are not careful. The best way to do this level is to hug the edge of the platform, then slide along towards the end. The alarm button is located on the second post from the end - once there i backup enough to observe the guards on the platform to my left and shoot them before they can reach the alarm. I then go to the end of the platform and side step out with the M16 aiming up so i can fire a grenade into the roof of the walkway to take the sniper guy out. The building with the terminal to deactivate the cameras is also a bit tricky as it features respawning guards. I find the best way to enter the last area is to get ahead of or follow the train, and go through the gate that opens for the train, using the M16 grenades to take out the guards on the tower as you approach. Then fire an M16 grenade about mid way on the wall of the first carriage (platform side) when the train has stopped, to take out the guard on the inside (you have to fire with precision as Priboi is also in this carriage and vunerable) and then pick the lock and reach Priboi, before the advancing soliders from the far cabin reach you. Ignore the last two carriages.

Notes: The respawning guards from the cabin who emerge after the train pulls in don't respawn forever. I've stood outside the cabin and shot them repeatedly - after about 30 or so they stop.
Also when the train pulls in, you can go to the first carriage and there is a door at the locomotive end which you can't open (Priboi is on the otherside) - however, if you stand on the lip, far enough from the door so you can jump up without hitting the door frame, you can jump forwards and pass over the top of the door and end up in the carriage behind Priboi ! You still have to take out the guard in the carriage who is ahead of you behind the crates.
There is a M16 grenade stash in the large flat central building between the tracks.

Level 10 - Defend Priboi
Oh boy what a level ! The second half was really tough at first until you work out how to approach it. Not a very large level, but great fun, if not frustrating ! Another level i've played extensively. The first part is a little tricky, as Priboi is a bit reckless, and i tend to save the M16 for later, so i use the Uzi i get from the first guard i kill, but the Uzi is a shit weapon. I also find it stupid that you can't access the warehouse with the land mines until Priboi "speaks" to you .. but the second half of this level is the kicker. Basically you run into the area, and Priboi will take cover in the second house on the right ... you can roam the area as you like, but when you approach the area that Priboi is hiding, the level "acitvates" and soliders appear. The ones at the end of the road were real bastards, and Priboi behaves rather stupidly - he runs out regardless and gets shot unless you can kill the guards fast enough, whereas it would be more logical for him to stay where he was til the guards were dealt with ... i complete the level thus: I enter the area (staying well away from the activation point) and run up the road til i reach the two large buildings on the end. I go left between the last house and the building and place two land mines on the wall of the last house. I then run round to the right and approach the left house of the group of three at the end of the road and place a land mine on the lamp post on the left and on the left edge of the door frame. I then run into the building with the pillars where the helicopter lands, and on the second floor i get the LAW80's. I then leave the building and go left along the back of the houses til i reach the gap between the first and second houses (Priboi is in the second one) - with the LAW80 to hand i run through the alley between the houses and emerge onto the road and face left (as you emerge, the mines on the wall of the house should be heard going off and killing the guards who normally appear at the end of the road) - as you look, a lorry with guards drives into view - take it out with the LAW80 then turn round and run up the road towards the last building on the right ... another truck will appear at the left and deposit guards, but the land mines on the door frame and lamp post should take them out. Now follow Priboi into the building and wait at the foot of the stairs, facing the doorway ... a group of three guards will appear - kill them, then make your way to the second floor. Anya should inform you about a tank - go through the doorway and look through the first window on the left - you should see the tank in the distance, so use the last LAW80 to eliminate it. Now back up and cover the doorway ... another two groups of three guards will eventually try to make their way in - kill them, then ascend the last flight of stairs to the roof and away ! Learning where to place the land mines most effectively was the key bit - a really tough level.

Notes: In the first area, a helicopter appears overhead and flies away ... i've actually gone after it and managed to find it landed on the ground, quite a way from the level - here is a pic ! - you can jump on top and will suffer no damage from the spinning rotors - Jones is really tough !
I've had lots of fun dodging the tank and trying things. It was this which led me to discover that when the tank appears on the level, some extra guards do - in the building opposite the building the evac chopper lands on - a soldier appears outside and a guy with a LAW80 goes up to the first floor and stands in the corner where the wall is missing - here is a pic i took from the far side - You can see the guys on the right (there are also two other soldiers at the front of the building on the first floor who "appear" as one - they are standing in the same spot !) ... also notice on the left of the pic that the tank has run into the truck and the truck is up the side of the tank (but it always lands on its wheels !) ... as for these extra guards, they don't really have any bearing on the level, except if you miss the tank, you can have another go by getting the LAW80 off the guard. This led me to try something - i used the second LAW80 to destroy the second truck before it could discharge its guards - i then got the LAW80 from the solider, and was gonna use it on the tank, but as the tank moved past the third house, where the guards would normally appear from the second truck, another large group of guards appeared from nowhere and shot me ! Bastards ! Another ploy is when placing the land mines, before you place the two on the lamp post and door frame, place one to the left of the building opening you can see in the pic above (near where the soldier outside is standing) - when the tank appears, the guards spawn near here, and the mine will take them out, so you can simply pick up the LAW80.

Level 11 - Eagles Nest I
Possibly the most beautiful level. The start point has beautiful sweeping views of the snowy mountainside and your objectives - utterly brilliant. And the level is great too, divided into three areas; my only complaint perhaps its a bit too easy, especially the lat bit. But still superb. Relatively straight forward, and as your armed with the superb suppressed MP5, its no problem with silent attacks. Not much in the way of odd things to report on this level. The second area is only accessible from one entrance, however there is an exit gate you can get one of the guards to open, in a similar way to the other levels. The guard you need to employ patrols around the building in the corner near the gate - either wound him from afar or go up to the outer wall when he's nearby and fire a loud weapon - either way, he'll be active and all you need to do is retreat from the gate up the mountainside a little way and he'll open the gate ... be careful though, as sometimes, the three guards inside the building also become active.

Notes: As i said, nothing much unusual to report - i do enjoy playing this level, and i've recently been given to taking out the guards in the guard towers by lining them up from the mountain side somewhere, in such away as i can shoot them in a line using the sniper rifle - the most you can align is four if you get it just right, but i've only managed to shoot 3 with one shot -
here is a pic of the four guards in question. Oh yes, and here is another pic i took which always makes me smile - reminds me of a blow up doll methinks !.

Level 12 - Eagles Nest II
Another beautiful level, but it gets tough from here ! The guards from here on in also seem to be a bit more accurate and alert. Another wonderful snow level, and the castle idea is good. The castle is very tricky to negotiate at first - half the time its up the ladder in the tower at one end, run along the battlements, then descend the ladder in the other tower. It can be tricky to work out where to go. And the last part can be confusing as its not obvious where the level finishes - you have to exit thru arch and enter the final part from underground via a lift ... and as i said the guards are alert - sometimes someone starts shooting at you and you can't work out where its coming from ! Its a very long level, but there are some shortcuts - look out for slabs of masonry on the ground near fenced areas, and utilise them to enter areas quickly by jumping over the fence rather than having to go round the battlements route. There is an interesting area about midway through the level where there's an arch into an enclosed area with a building, some huts, a patrolling guard and a staionary guard, and a fenced bit with a gate you can't open. The building contains a medikit, and one of the huts contains a sniper rifle - very handy for this level. Also note that the gate at the end is a red herring - if you move along the fence to the corner behind the huts, there is a second gate in the corner you can open. In the last part, before going underground, there are some cabins in the distance which i've explored but found nothing in. Excellently tough level.

Notes: There is a short cut which can eliminate a large chunk of the level, but it does not always work. At the start of the level, when you pass thru the first arch and there is a building behind a wall and a gate and the tanks under cover further on; normally you ascend the tower in the corner and turn left along the "long" battlement - if you go right along the short piece, you will reach an area where another wall meets the wall you're on, and the masonry at the junction is missing - pic here - if you can get onto the joining wall, you are actually in the last part of the level. But the gap is very odd - sometimes i've made it via a jump, othertimes i've descended the crack then climbed up. But other times i somehow fall through the wall, and end up losing a lot of health - and once or twice i've been on the outside ! That was fun as i could not work out how to get back in ! In the end, you can go round to the left and jump down onto the cable car and get back where you started - here is a pic of Jones on the roof of the cable car building ! (Notice i don't have much health - its a long way down from the wall !)

Level 13 - Nuclear Infiltration
Another level i love - arguably my fave ! I love the layout, and the sky is absolutely gorgeous ! The huge chimneys on the left are magnificent ! The level itself is quite tough - again in three longish areas; the first and last being above ground, the second underground. The underground bit is tough, but there is a way of making it easier. Basically, using the AK-47 i've taken from a dead guard, i approach every door and fire a round, then back up a little and crouch. Any guard on the other side usually hears, and runs to investigate (you can hear him/them run usually) - as he opens the door, i just shoot upwards into his body and he's usually dead by the time the door opens. Its a useful and relatively safe strategy. Sometimes the guards on the otherside, especially if its a corridor, are patrolling, so they maybe out of earshot, so if nothing happens, wait a few more secs that fire another round (as close to the door as poss). All the areas in this lev are quite tricky, and its great fun. Good old sniper rifle is the key weapon here, especially on the last bit. And the M16 grenades are useful too.

Notes: I've spent hours on this level. Basically, all the action takes place in a fenced area which has three sub areas, also fenced - the left area contains the chimneys, the middle area is where the action takes place, and there are buildings in the right area. But each area is inaccessible from its neighbour(s). I've tried for so long to see if there was a way into the left or right areas. I so wanted to have a look around the chimneys ... anyway, after much perseverance, i finally found away into the right hand area - which is a bit tricky to explain, but it involves jumping over a fence near the building at the area just before you enter the underground bit. I've examined the office style buildings - hoping to find a message from the game designers or summat, ya know, like Doom or Quake etc !! But nothing. This pair of pics shows one of the buildings. The first pic is taken from the normal part of the level, after you exit the underground part, just before you approach the final area. You can see the building i visited in the distance, with the three "generator" type things. The second pic is actually from the building itself, the generators above me, looking back the otherway. It was really fun to visit ! I just wish i could get into the left hand area and examine those chimneys, so if anyone has figured it out - please let me know !

Level 14 - Finding The Bomb
What a tough level to finish ! Very linear, and completely underground, it requires quite a few times getting things exactly right to proceed. Here are some of my tips for thus level: First, keep your M16 and Jackhammer in reserve. When the APC appears in the lower level just after you deactivate the door via the computer terminal, you can take out the APC much more easily if you go back into the computer room, jump onto the table, use the Ak47 to take out the large window, look down and destroy the APC from here. In the area where you have to use a terminal to deactivate the sentry guns in the large room so you can access the terminal on the middle floor, don't bother with the terminal til you've taken out the two guards patrolling the corridors ahead. Use the lower corridor to access the large room and without crossing the threshold (if you do, guards will come out), take out the patrolling guard with the Sniper. Then run back, use the terminal, and enter the large room using the door from the upper corridor. If you are quick, its down the ladder and into the room to deactivate the terminal and the guards won't have time to hit you. The cooling area is probably the toughest bit. Before you climb the ladder, make sure you place landmines on the doorframe on your left, and on the left hand side of the opening of the dark area. What i do is climb the ladder then and take out the guards in the control room, then before using the terminal, place landmines on the two side walls outside, at the midpoints. Then go in and use the terminal. Two guards spawn on the gantry and run along, hopefully the land mines will take them out as the land mines down below do the same to the guards there. I use my M16 here and leave via the control room on the left - sometimes the landmines on the side walls are'nt enought to kill the guards, so use the M16 bullets to take out the near guard, and use an M16 grenade to take out the guard on the farside if reqd. Then its down the ladder and make for the door fast ! This level can be so hit and miss - sometimes the mines down below don't kill the guards and then its a devil of a job to get down. In the final zone, make sure you are full with health and have the M16 ready before you exit the room - do not descend the ladder but stand so the guard who spawns in the far right corner can't see you ... as the guard appears down below on the left, wait for him to come into view, then M16 him. Then step out and use an M16 grenade to take out that guard in the far corner. Switch to landmines and descend the ladder, then however many landmines you have, place them on the wall as you run to the back and enter the small tunnel section with two exits at the back, where Anya will appear. Now switch to the Jackhammer and blitz any guards, and also Ekk, when she appears. When Ekk is dead and Anya appears, try and get ahead of her as a guard will sometimes be on his way from one of the other exits and be entering the tunnel section as Anya leaves. Then its a matter of escorting Anya round the area to the bomb. I usually stay near the crates below the window of the room above, and as the guards come alternately through the exits to my left and right, i blitz them. Once the friendly soliders arrive, it should be relatively easy to hold out for the big win, and the closing clip !

"I'm going in !"

Notes: As i said, its very linear. There is one area, about midway, where you can choose between one of two routes, but the hard one contains a room packed with guards which is not easy to negotiate if you are trying to save your M16 grenades. But it does contain some UZI's and ammo for the MP5, but most of the time its not worth it. It bugs me in the cooling area when the mines I place on the side walls more often than not, do not kill the guards who spawn on the gantry - i always have to take them out manually. Its probably the most random area, sometimes you need a load of luck.
Don't miss the stash hidden behind the crates further on in the level. Lots of goodies, including a Colt, which does not appear pn any other level. A bit odd that !

On 6 - Get Priboi I recently discovered a different path after shutting down the generator. Instead of climbing the tower I went back to the stack of green shipping crates. I got on the top, and ran LEFT and from there jumped onto the top of the wall surrounding the roofed box compound, (where the anti-tank weapon is). It's a little trick to jump, so it helped to go left and have more wall to land on. Then you run along the entire wall, around the back of the shooting range, and right where the wall makes a diagonal, you can get a running start and leap over the fence, thus avoiding the tower, the sniper and even the helicopter. It never takes off.

Well thanks for posting this man! Really apreciated. Project IGI 1 is one of the greatest games ever. The concept alone totally stands out. I'm gonna contribute to this thread too, since i'm kind of an expert myself in those missions hehe.. I wanna read this stuff first. Sadly the game doesn't seem to work on my newer machine (f.. ridiculous if you ask me but more people seem to have this problem) but i'm gonna play it again one way or another, i'm kinda getting sick of IGI 2 (finished both games multiple times)

I just remembered that i couldnt get it to work on my newer machine ... i discovered that it was because my Graphics Card (an ATI) had a dual display option, which was causing the game to crash. I figured i'd try disabling the secondary display in my Control Panel (i wasnt using it) and hey presto ! The game works ! Just thought i'd mention it ...

Nice review, Dragunov! I'm also one of the types who want to explore everything on the given level, but I must say I haven't played IGI for a while (currently, I'm literally dissecting the IGI 2: Covert Strike), so I don't quite remember all the tips & tricks... But try this one (if you haven't already tried it):

I've always wondered how to kill all those respawning guys at the beginning of the Resupply level the best possible and easiest way. It's simple: ensure the alarm is not set when you enter the area with the barracks, pick up all the grenades from the warehouse, then first throw some of them to the middle barracks (where there are 5x2 guys I think), and once all the guys are killed, it's time for a little trick. Open the door on the first barracks (where all those guys will start coming from), quickly throw a grenade, and then run to the near pole to turn the alarm on. The first 3 guys in the barracks will pop up, but will soon be shred to pieces with the grenade's blast. Once you hear the blast, quickly turn the alarm off. Then wait till the corpses are gone, and do it once again, till all the guys are dead. Hope you haven't already figured this trick

Btw Dragunov, I have one question re: the last level. When you use that computer which operates the coolant system near the end of the level and the enemies pop up, it often happens to me that they get killed (by themselves?). Firstly I've thought they're being shot by the friendly guys protecting Anya, but you can actually hear the shots from their Spas 12, so they must shoot at each other I guess. Did the same thing happened to you as well?

Yeah - the black attired Red Berets attack both you and Ekk's soliders (with the Balaclavas) in that part - i think thats the only place it happens. The Red Berets come out of the dark 'tunnel' whilst Ekk's guards come through the doors.

Well, I never really paid close attention to who was I facing in that last level, but anyway, thanks! Maybe those "red berets" were "normal" guards protecting that nuclear plant (or wherever that last level took place), since Anya mentions something about EKK soldiers "gassing all opposition while being disguised as support staff" (or something like that). Who knows?

I tried the cooling area bit a different way last night ... I placed no landmines and after activating the cooling system, i stayed inside the room out of site ... and let the Red Berets and Ekk's guards take each other out ! After a few mins, there was no more gunfire, so i crept out ... there was a guard down below, and one on the gantry above, but no red berets (i guess they dont respawn forever). There was still one guard on the gantry i was on (I guess the Red Berets had killed the other), but using the silenced MP5 took care of him ! You can then slide down the ladder to the floor and exit the area without so much as a single shot being fired at you, as the guards dont notice you as they are virtually facing the wall !

Finally figured out how to get on top of the building with 3 generators.
(After long, train platform-like covered walk way, there's a secuirty building. From the 2nd floor of that building, on the corner balcony nearest the rocky mountain, you can jump over the hand-rail and perch on top of the spot light.
Turn left, back up slowly and run the length of the ledge just outside of the balcony's railing. Then jump to top of the fence and be sure to hold the 'W' or forward key down. You keep yourself stuck at the top of the fence and slightly turn your mouse so that you're slowly edging to the right. You make the corner of the fence, keep holding the 'W' and keep working yourself to the right, eventually you 'pop' thru the fence and you can scale the rocky mountain and end up on the roof of the building w/ 3 generators.)

It's funny how you can go from roof, to the outside of the top walls, and then step out into space at least 5 game feet, and not plummet to the ground.

Hey, nice work there man ! That is indeed how I got into the area. It was really weird the first time, finally getting onto the outer fence, only to find that i couldnt pass through as i'd expected ! Only later goes did i find the 'gap' by jumping round the fence ...

Yeah, that building is a bit odd, it does have areas you can walk on which are seemingly invisible - I recall falling off at one point and falling to my death


As an aside, I magnaged - once i hasten to add - to get into the Large Chimney Area ! You have to do it from the end of the level, in the last area ... you can climb the short tower on the left and from the railing jump onto the roof of the garage type building - although the margin for error is miniscule, and the searchlight can get in the way ... from there you can jump over into the Chimney Areas by making another difficult jump from the wall at the rear of the garage building to the wall of the Chimney Area. I forgot to take a screenshot, and now i cant get back in - if you miss the roof jump you take health damage so you only have so many go's before you die !


In fact, i'm gonna have another go right now !

Edit: Damn ! Got onto the garage with my last try, then cocked the last jump up from the wall ...

Has anyone else looked? It takes freaking forever. I ran for an hour one time and never came close. I'd love to know if others have looked?? I've tried to anayze the angle the plane is flying at when it disappears behind the mountain (seems to be about 59 degrees from the vertical, but how it helps to know that, I don't know!)

And then you run to the top of the first mountain range and you get to a huge valley (See pic). But does it help to 'run' to the next range, which must be at least another hour of holding the 'W' key away?? (FYI - My pic includes some white lines, one vertical, one measured at 59 degrees. I tried running to where it hit the ground, but didn't find anything useful except snowy rock.

That damn plane ! It is of course possible, as i suspect with some of the Helicopters on other levels, that it enters the ground somewhere and is hidden from view ...

I just had a go ! I thought i'd lost it, but as i was tracking on the map, it came into view ! It was heading virtually SE as you look at the map, but as i was scrolling, the map suddenly seemed to reach a depression, causing the image to magnify and the plane seemed to vanish, but whether I lost it or whether the plane just vanished i'm not sure. I was just gonna take a screen grab as well. BAH ! Gotta have another go soon !
